Short CV
Dr Thordur Vikingur Fridgeirsson is a well-known person in the Icelandic academic and industrial/business sectors. Originally a successful manager in the private sector mainly known for his leadership in adapting the Icelandic fisheries sector towards EU regulations, managing large IT installations and directing the business development at the largest IT company in Iceland. Then as a business consultant in his own company (Midpoint Consulting) and then as professor at Reykjavik University (School of Engineering).
At Reykjavik University he founded the research hub CORDA (Center of Risk and Decision Analysis). This active research hub is a melting pot of theories from engineering science and social science. The main research and teaching work is on public projects addressing project management and risk assessment in context of human behaviour.
Thordur Vikingur graduated as PhD from Reykjavik University in 2014. His thesis covered public project governance. His dissertation is named “Improvement of the public project lifecycle” and is a comprehensive study on project management governance frameworks and how humans behave within such frameworks.
Thordur Vikingur is holding a B Certification from IPMA (International Project Management Association). He acquired his certification in 1998 on basis of several large IT projects, both installations and development projects.
Thordur Vikingur has participated in seed projects and entrepreneurial work for years, both as ad hoc project manager, consultant, instructor and company founder. Several of the business plans supervised by Thordur Vikingur turned into successful ventures.
Thordur Vikingur has also been active in the media. Among his media actions are working as a columnist for the largest business publication in Iceland (Vidskiptabladid). Furthermore, Thordur Vikingur conducted for several years well received radio programs on subjects of social interest such as management, crisis, economics, finance, business ethics and documentaries on academic topics at the National Broadcasting Service (RUV).
Thordur Vikingur published his first book in 1999, *The Net-Book*, an insightful exploration of how the Internet and e-commerce would transform the business landscape and create new sources of value. His second book, published in 2003, focused on project management and argued that project-based thinking would become central to the way organizations operate and create value. Titled *Management in Times of Change and Agility* (*Stjórnun á tímum hraða og breytinga*), the book anticipated what is now widely recognized as the era of projectification, in which projects have become a dominant form of organizing work and driving innovation. In 2007, he published his third textbook, *Risk, Decisions and Uncertainty* (*Áhætta, óvissa og ákvarðanir*). The book highlights the importance of understanding risk and assessing uncertainty in business decision-making. Looking back, its emphasis on risk awareness can be seen as remarkably prescient in light of the collapse of Iceland's banking system in 2008—though that is a story in itself. These are only a few examples.
